In the following brief review/overview, we will take a look at the various features of this machine and give you what we consider to be some of its strengths and weaknesses. Strengths: * The first thing we noticed and appreciated about this machine is that it's built like the proverbial tank. That is no surprise for an Akiles machine, but we found that the CoilMac M was of especially high quality construction. The body and all of the major components are made of metal, and we see no reason why this machine wouldn't last you for years without the need for repair or maintenance. * The four to one pitch ratio that the CoilMac M features is one of the more versatile pitches on the spiral coil binding world. With this ratio, you will be able to bind a range of documents from six millimeters (about a quarter inch) to as large as fifty millimeters (two inches). You will want to get some experience under your belt, however, before you attempt to bind books that are larger than one inch. Still, it is important to keep in mind that supplies for spiral coil binding in these size ranges are easy to find, and are available in somewhere approaching sixty colors, so you can hardly find a more versatile binding system to work with. * At 17 pages per lift, the CoilMac M has a pretty decent punching capacity for a medium-use machine of this type. * The CoilMac M includes five disengageable pins that allow for the punching of all of the most common sized of paper, from letter, to legal, to A4 and A5. Weaknesses: * Though there is an inserting table that makes hand insertion of the coils a little bit easier, you should be aware that there is no electric coil inserter included on the CoilMac M. Here is a short report in which we take a look at the Roll @ Coil's strengths and weaknesses. Strengths: * If you have been shopping around for a coil inserting machine, you have likely found that there are a wide variety of options at a wide variety of prices. If your organization is on a budget, and you have already made a purchase of a machine such as a modular binding punch, you may well be looking to save some money on your coil inserting system. That's where we think that the Roll @ Coil really shines, coming in at a cost of a little less than two hundred fifty dollars. As we will discuss further, the Roll @ Coil may not have all the features that some of the other inserters do, but its price makes it fit within even the tightest budget. It pairs nicely with coil binding machines to make a great little production line. * This is one case in which low price does not equate to low quality. In our opinion, the Roll @ Coil is a very ruggedly built piece of equipment. The case is heavy duty, the components appear to be high quality, and we see no reason why this machine wouldn't stand up to years of use. In fact this machine is commonly found in professional binderies and in-plant print production facilities. * The Roll @ Coil also has a few nice features that you don't normally find on a lot of coil binding machines. For instance, there is an alignment channel that helps the user form the spine of the document when inserting coils of a larger diameter. There is also a pitch identifying device, and a sizing guide that can help you find the correct size coil for your book. Weaknesses: * One slight limitation that we found with the Roll @ Coil is that its two rollers are fixed. Most of the pricier coil binding systems on the market let you adjust distances between rollers, which is handy for spines of a larger diameter. To be fair even the most expensive coil inserters on the market have some degree of difficulty with larger diameters, but it should be said that the Roll @ Coil is probably best suited for diameters up to around twenty two millimeters. Anything above that, and the degree if difficulty becomes fairly high. * It also must be pointed out that the Roll @ Coil's rollers are smallish compared so some of the other machines on the market. This is part of what makes this machine not the best choice for larger diameter wire, but is not an issue at all for smaller sizes. * The only chink in the Roll @ Coil's rugged armor is the plastic/rubber belt that drives the rollers. As the only machine available to consumers that can bind documents with either a two to one or three to one pitch hole pattern, the Wiremac Duo offers users some unprecedented flexibility. Here are some of the strengths and weaknesses of this machine as we see them. Strengths: * Of course one of the Wiremac Duo"s biggest strengths is its ability to punch in either a two to one or three to one pitch ratio. If you consider that you can use the three to one pitch punch with wire-o, spiral coil, or GBC Proclick, and that the two to one pitch punch can utilize double loop and spiral coil, you actually have the possibility of five separate binding styles with the WireMac Duo. That is a lot of flexibility for a machine at this price point, and perhaps one of the reasons the WireMac Duo seems to be growing in popularity. * This machine features a pair of punching throats, each of them 14 inches in length. What this gives you is the ability to punch any document that is legal sized or smaller. While this is a great capacity, it is important to note that the open throat design and the fully disengageable dies of the WireMac Duo mean that you can punch documents that are larger by using a two punch process. * The WireMac Duo has a nice little system in place for setting the depth at which you punch you holes. It is very easy to use, and will help you ensure the strength and usability of the books that you are producing. * We really liked the inclusion of the wire closing mechanism on the Wiremac Duo, and were especially impressed with the heavy duty construction that it features. Coilmac ECI Review by Jeff McRitchie Perhaps the most popular coil binding systems on the market, the Akiles CoilMac ECI is meant to provide a solution for businesses that aim to do a moderate amount of coil binding, probably for in-house documents and reports. Here is a brief overview of this machine and some of its strengths and weaknesses as we see them. Strengths: * The punching capacity of the CoilMac ECI is stated at seventeen pages per lift, and we did find that it was capable of reaching that number. We discovered however, that it was much easier and more productive to keep the number to around fifteen sheets. That is still a pretty decent punching capacity for a manual machine like this, and we also found that it punched two plastic cover sheets at one time without any problems. * The CoilMac ECI has a coil inserter located at the front of the machine. Inserters make the binding process a lot easier and we found that this one worked quite well. We really liked the foot pedal operation which allowed us to keep both hands on the book while the coil is being inserted. For larger sized books, you will still need to insert the coils by hand, but that is the case with any machine. * One of the great features of the CoilMac ECI is that it has dies that are disengageable. What this means is that when you are doing your punching, you can disable some of the punching pins to accommodate different sizes of documents. This will enable you to produce nice clean punches on letter, A4 and A5 sized documents. That is a lot of flexibility, and will fill the needs of the vast majority of the documents that most organizations will be producing. However, even if you find the need to punch sheets that are longer than that, the CoilMac ECI features a continuous punching guide that allows you to use a two punch process to do the job. * The depth of punch margin control on the CoilMac ECI is also a nice touch. This is a feature that makes it much easier to gauge how far from the sheets' edge you are punching your holes. For larger sized books, you will want to punch the holes further from the edge in to ensure usability and durability. Weaknesses: * The CoilMac ECI is a nice machine with some great capabilities, but it is still a manual machine when all is said and done. All that means is that if you are a larger organization that will be doing a fair amount of binding, and/or binding larger books on a regular basis, you may want to consider purchasing a machine with an electric punch. They are considerable more expensive, though, so you will have to weigh the pluses and minuses yourself. * As stated above, the CoilMac ECI's coil inserter won't work with most larger sized coils. Here is a brief overview of this machine's strengths and weaknesses. Strengths: * The punching capacity of the Coilmac EPI is easily one of the largest that is available on the market. Officially stated at twenty five sheets of 80 gsm paper, we found that it really worked best at around twenty two. Still, that's a lot of sheets, and it will get you quickly through even the largest projects. This machine can also punch two clear covers at one time. * The foot pedal control of the Coilmac EPI is a great feature that makes it possible for you to hold onto your documents with both hands while you are doing your punching. We found that this was really handy for increasing the punch quality when working with sheet numbers at or near the top of the machine's capabilities. Plus you can operate the coil inserter using your foot pedal by simply flipping the switch located on the front of the machine. * The Coilmac EPI features an open throat design which allows the user to punch documents that are longer than the number of pins available. The continuous punching guide enables you to align the stack, flip it over, and punch the rest of the holes. We found the whole thing to be a fairly easy process even though we didn't think we would have to do it very often. The standard 13 inch width of the machine should be more than adequate to get you through the vast majority of jobs. * While it only represents about a fifty dollar value, and we are talking about a machine that costs a little bit of money, we did find it nice that the Coilmac EPI comes with a pair of high quality crimping pliers. This tool is so important to the process that we can't imagine anyone attempting spiral coil binding without them. * Another couple features that we really appreciated about the Coilmac EPI were the depth of margin punch control which allows you to set the correct punch from the edge of the document (increasing the usability and durability of larger documents), and the open throat design that lets you bind letter, legal, as well as A4 and A5 sized sheets with ease. * The Coilmac EPI appears to us to be extraordinarily well built, and we see no reason why it wouldn't last the user for a good many years of daily use. Weaknesses: * For all its benefits, the Coilmac EPI does not include fully disengageable dies. Although for the vast majority of jobs this won't matter in the least, it is a nice feature to have when you are going to be producing documents that are custom sized. For this feature you will need to step up to the CoilMac EPI+ * We would have liked to see this system come with separate foot pedals for inserting and punching. It is currently designed so that the user must flip a switch to toggle between functions. It can get a little tedious if you are punching and binding one document at a time.
