In 1966 the American surf industry was strongly behind the Noseriding push with very large boards (up to 10'0 by 24" wide) with deep scooped concave noses big fins rolled bottoms and a midway wide-point. The Aussies were into shorter (9'0" to 9'6") lighter finer boards with pinched rails and "pig" templates with the wide-point behind halfway creating a livelier more aggressive approach. The Aussie approach came to be dubbed the "Involvement School" whereby the surfer worked the wide tail of the board hunting for fast sections. The "pig" template was highly compatible with that approach but a sweetly designed high-speed trimming zone two-thirds forward was just as important. Fine "breakaway" rails added to this speedy trim by letting go of water cleanly. Hence the birth of the term "release" in rail design. Well now it's back! The rediscovery of having the section-hunting ability off the tail coupled with the searing trims available up front is a new thrill to many and it's taking off fast!
